So I have been watching the new trend of "light rigs" and am thinking of jumping on board for a next season build. In the meantime I have been looking at the light wheel options and how EXPENSIVE they are. Well you can get the d-lux wheels or the new carbon fiber wheels Krawlfreak is coming out with but both are over $100!! Delmonte runs the inexpensive version HPI wheels and cuts them down with great success so I thought to myself.....now that is a guy who is thinking! And so I thought......

Take a stock xr10 wheel at 1.85oz with full hardware

Strip it down to just the main wheel at .90oz

Chuck it up with a screw and nut then put it in your drill press and cut the bottom off with an exacto knife

Flip it over and cut the bead part off

When I was done it measured out to 1.1" and I wanted them a bit smaller (and lighter) so I cut them down to .85" by scribbing a line and then back to the drill press with the razor knife.

Almost cut the weight in 1/2 of what the stock carcass weighs and almost 1/4 of a fully loaded xr10 wheel!
(I believe this is what Krawls wheels weigh)

and ready to glue on to the wheel (just like the new $120 carbon wheels require you to do and just like we have been doing to our super wheels for years and also like ALL the 1/8th scale racers do!)

obviously this will only work if the axial offset works for you. Otherwise I thought of getting thicker or thinner hex's to adjust width. I havent tested these yet but for practically nothing it seems like its worth a try. At the very least using them in the rear.
Its a cheap way to get a 1/2 oz wheel if it will work for your application.

hey Jim you could also do the VP hub mod to the wheel for the adjustable offset

oh damn good call John. I will have to look and see if there is enough material there but jut off the top of my head I am thinking YES. Actually it wouldnt surprise me if someone else has already done this whole mod but I have not seen it yet.

nice work Jim! I believe you can fit a dlux main weight and possibly even one weight ring in those rims once you cut them down like that. You might even be able to fit a little more since your's are narrowed

Sweet I was wondering about the knuckle weights. I notice there is a small area inside the structure of the wheel I may need to dremmel to get knuckle weights deep into the wheels. I may also drill some holes in the main body of the bead section to see how much weight I can shed b4 the wheel becomes weak. The biggest thing I wonder is the if the offset will be where we like it or not since I have no experience with XR axles/wheels.
